Privacy

The short version: this site sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser, and sells nothing to anyone. It counts visits, without knowing who you are. The long version follows.

Visits are counted, without cookies

I count visits so I know whether anyone reads this and where they come from. The page sends a few small messages to this site: the path you are on, the domain of the site that linked here (not the full address), any campaign tags in the link (utm_*), how far down the page you got, whether the page stayed on your screen for ten seconds, and a handful of clicks that say whether the page does its job: a download, the way to Send, copying the address, booting the Macintosh, switching the marketing department on. The server adds your country and the kind of device, browser and system, read from your browser’s user agent.

To tell one visitor from another within a day, the counting service hashes your IP address and user agent together with the name of this site and a random value that changes every day. The hash is kept for that day only; the next morning the random value is deleted, after which the hash cannot be traced back to anyone or linked to another day. The site’s name is part of the hash, so a visit here cannot be linked to a visit to another of my sites. Your IP address itself is never stored. What remains are daily totals (so many visitors, from so many countries), nothing about any one person.

If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, nothing is counted at all. The counting is done by my own admin panel, on the same Cloudflare account as this site, and not by any third party. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in knowing how the site is used.

In your browser

Nothing, with one exception: if you boot the Macintosh and turn its sound off, that choice is remembered in your browser’s local storage, so it stays off next time. It never leaves your device.

Hosting and fonts

The site is served by Cloudflare, which processes your IP address to deliver the pages, as any web server does. The fonts come from this site too, so your browser connects to nobody else.

The apps

Each app says its own: Polisher works on your Mac and sends nothing anywhere unless you set up a cloud provider yourself; Flow makes no network requests at all; Send has its own page.

Your rights

There is nothing here to show you, correct or delete, because nothing about you is kept. If you think otherwise, write to marcin@itchscratched.com. You can also complain to a data protection authority.
